Mitterhorn

Mitterhorn, Mountain summit in Steinernes Meer, Austria.

Mitterhorn is a summit in the Berchtesgaden Alps rising to 2,491 meters with steep limestone cliffs. Its position allows direct access to neighboring peaks Breithorn and Persailhorn.

Climbing routes around this peak were established in the early 1900s by Austrian Alpine Club members. These paths opened the Steinernes Meer area to mountaineers and hikers.

The summit connects to other peaks through trails that are part of the local mountain culture in the Northern Salzburg Alps. Climbers who visit help maintain traditions of alpine exploration that are rooted in the region's identity.

Two base huts provide access to the peak: the Wiechenthaler Hut from Saalfelden and the Riemann Hut from Maria Alm. Both serve as starting points and offer equipment storage for climbers.

The peak has a prominence of 76 meters, which sets it apart geologically among the many summits in the region. This detail makes it an interesting destination for climbers who study the characteristics of local mountain ranges.
