Archenkanzel, Mountain viewpoint in Berchtesgaden National Park, Germany
Archenkanzel is a viewpoint located at 1346 meters elevation in Berchtesgaden National Park, offering direct views down to Koenigssee lake and the surrounding alpine peaks. The terrain features steep forested slopes, open mountain meadows, and rocky outcrops with sweeping views into the valley below.
The viewpoint sits near remaining structures from World War II military use, when observation posts were built to overlook the surrounding valleys. This area was strategically important during the mountain warfare of that era.
The mountain huts along the route display Bavarian building styles and serve food made from local recipes that reflect the region's traditions. You can see how local families have lived and worked in these mountains for a long time.
The hike starts from Schoenau am Koenigssee and climbs about 800 meters over roughly five hours, covering around 15 kilometers in total. The route is best tackled during stable weather and requires good fitness, since the upper sections are steep and exposed in places.
Below the viewpoint, lake captains perform a famous echo demonstration when their boats pass, playing trumpets that bounce off the mountain walls and return as echoes. This unusual sound effect has been a tradition among local boaters for many years.
