Saletalm, Mountain pasture in Schönau am Königsee, Germany
Saletalm is a mountain pasture in the Berchtesgaden Alps, set between Lake Königssee and Lake Obersee at around 610 meters (2,000 ft) above sea level. It has a self-service restaurant, indoor rooms with different characters, and a large outdoor seating area where hikers often stop to rest.
Saletalm was founded in 1912 and quickly became a regular resting point for hikers and mountaineers moving through the Berchtesgaden Alps. Over the decades, what started as a simple pasture stop gradually grew into a more organized place with food and shelter for visitors.
The name Saletalm comes from the Saletbach stream that runs through the valley nearby. The pasture still functions as a working farm, so visitors can see signs of real Alpine dairy life rather than just a tourist stop.
The only way to reach the pasture is by taking the electric boat across Lake Königssee to the Salet dock, then walking a few minutes on a flat path. Starting early in the day is a good idea, as the trails around the area get much more crowded by midday.
Inside the building there is a small room known as the Jägerstube, decorated in the style of an old hunting lodge, which many visitors walk past without noticing. It offers a very different feel from the main dining room and tends to be the quieter corner of the place.
