Fagstein

Fagstein is a summit in the Berchtesgaden Alps that rises to 2164 meters (7100 feet) above sea level with steep rocky faces and grassy upper sections. The mountain sits between forested lower slopes and exposed alpine terrain at its peak.

Local shepherds established pathways across this mountain over centuries while managing livestock in the high pastures. These traditional routes formed the foundation for the hiking trails used today.

German mountaineering traditions continue at Fagstein through organized group climbs and seasonal celebrations at designated rest points along the trails.

The climb takes several hours and requires good fitness, with sections crossing exposed rocky areas near the summit. Weather can change quickly at this elevation, so proper hiking boots and rain gear are essential.

On clear days the summit provides views toward neighboring peaks and the valleys below, making it a vantage point for observing the broader Alpine landscape. The rock formations contain fossils from ancient times when this area was submerged.
