Alter Nordfriedhof, Cemetery and architectural heritage monument in Maxvorstadt, Munich, Germany.
The Alter Nordfriedhof is a cemetery and architectural monument in Munich that spans rectangular grounds organized into 16 separate sections. Along the western edge stand 30 arcade vaults arranged in a row, with a central cross marking the grounds.
Architect Arnold Zenetti designed this burial ground in 1866 to serve Munich's growing population, with the first burial taking place on October 5, 1868. After World War II, the site was reduced from 7,272 burial places to approximately 700.
The burial ground holds graves of many Munich residents and notable figures, serving as a place where visitors encounter reminders of past lives and generations. Walking through reveals personal stories told through the monuments and memorial inscriptions.
The grounds function as both a cemetery and public park, remaining open throughout the day and night for visitors to walk through. Wide pathways make it easy to move about, and benches are available for sitting and resting.
After wartime destruction, the grounds were partially transformed into a green space with walking paths and benches creating a restful area. This conversion resulted in a quiet refuge in the middle of the city that few visitors expect to find.
