Magdeburg-Cochstedt Airport, airport in Germany
Magdeburg-Cochstedt Airport is a commercial airport in Hecklingen, located about 37 kilometers southwest of Magdeburg. It has one main asphalt runway roughly 2,500 meters long at about 183 meters elevation and is used primarily for private flights, business aviation, and aerospace research and development.
The airport was built in 1957 as a military base for Soviet forces and expanded in the late 1960s. After German reunification in the 1990s, it received a commercial operating license in 1994, though it later faced various operational challenges and changes in ownership.
The airport's name links two places: Cochstedt where it stands and Magdeburg, the nearby major city. Today it interests aviation enthusiasts who follow developments in small aircraft operations and experimental aviation technology.
The airport is easily reached by car via federal highway B180 and sits under an hour from Magdeburg. No direct public transportation serves the airport, so renting a car or taking a taxi is the most practical option for most visitors.
In 2007 the airport hosted the world's largest skydiving event, bringing jumpers from around the globe to attempt a world record. Today the site focuses mainly on drone and helicopter research along with testing of aviation technology.
