Stadion An der Alten Försterei, Football stadium in Köpenick, Berlin, Germany
Stadion An der Alten Försterei is an association football venue in Köpenick, Berlin, with over 21,000 seats and a three-level main grandstand. Part of the terracing consists of standing areas positioned right at the edge of the pitch, offering spectators a very close view of the action.
The ground opened on August 7, 1920, with a match between SC Union Oberschöneweide and then-champions 1. FC Nürnberg. In 2008 supporters began a major rebuild, working with their own hands and contributing thousands of hours of voluntary labor.
The name refers to an old forest inn that once stood nearby. Today fans from all over Berlin come here to support their team, and many know the story of the collective rebuilding that turned the ground into a place of local identity.
The ground sits near the Wuhlheide woods and is well connected by public transport. Standing areas let you get especially close to the play, and on home match days the place often fills up.
During the 2014 World Cup, organizers placed 800 sofas directly on the grass so that spectators could watch matches comfortably from the closest possible spot. This event became widely noticed and showed the relaxed, community-minded spirit of the place.
