Bergkirche St. Michael

Bergkirche St. Michael, Romanesque church on Kirchberg hill in Büsingen am Hochrhein, Germany.

Bergkirche St. Michael is a Romanesque church standing at about 420 meters elevation between Büsingen and Dörflingen, built with small round-arched windows and rubble stone masonry. The interior features a distinctive octagonal baptismal font and other original elements from different periods.

The church was first documented in a papal letter from Pope Urban II in 1095 and originally served as a baptismal center for multiple communities including Büsingen and Schaffhausen. Over the medieval period, the site became a central religious gathering place for surrounding settlements.

The church sits within a medieval settlement that includes the Mesmerhaus and older farm buildings forming a unified complex. The preserved tombstones tell of generations who worshiped at this location across the centuries.

The church is accessible via a footpath through vineyards, offering visitors a quiet approach without heavy infrastructure or disruptions. Regular services, weddings, and organ concerts take place here and are maintained by local associations and foundations.

The church stands within a 17-hectare landscape protection area established in 1939, surrounding the site like a natural island. Three bells hang in the church tower, with one newly cast in 1978.
