Wulfsen horse burial

The archaeological excavation revealed three horses placed side by side, with their remains preserved in a burial pit measuring 230 by 240 centimeters.

Discovered in 1974, the burial site dates between 700 and 800 AD, during the period before widespread Christianization influenced burial practices in the region.

The careful positioning of the horses, with their heads elevated and bodies aligned from south to north, indicates specific burial practices of Saxon communities.

The site contains 35 human burials alongside three horse remains, which researchers determined included one mare and two stallions measuring between 130-140 centimeters tall.

The archaeological findings represent the first documented triple horse burial in northeastern Lower Saxony, setting it apart from other medieval burial grounds.
