Wulfsen horse burial, Early medieval horse burial site in Wulfsen, Germany.
The Wulfsen horse burial is an archaeological site in northwestern Germany where three horses were interred in a single pit. Alongside the animals, the remains of about 35 people were found at this location, indicating a larger early medieval burial community.
The site was discovered in 1974 and dates to the period between 700 and 800 AD. This was a phase when the Saxons still followed their own burial traditions before Christianity altered funeral practices in the region.
The way the horses were placed shows what early medieval communities believed about these animals. These burial practices reveal how valued horses were in the life and death rituals of the time.
The location sits in a rural area and is freely accessible, though it offers no facilities on site. Visitors should note that only marked areas are visible, and most archaeological findings are displayed in museums.
This was the first known burial of three horses together in this region, setting it apart from all other early medieval burial grounds. The combination of animal and human burials in one location is a rare archaeological feature from this period.
