Dampfbahn-Route Sachsen, Themenstraße in Sachsen
The Dampfbahn-Route Sachsen is a railway line through Saxony where vintage steam and diesel locomotives operate. The route has three branches connecting several cities and smaller towns via narrow-gauge tracks, lined with historic stations and railway museums.
The route follows the paths of historic narrow-gauge railways that once moved people and goods across Saxony. Since 2009, the Sächsisch-Oberlausitzer Eisenbahngesellschaft has operated it and received awards in 2013 and 2014 for innovative tourism development.
The route is named after the steam locomotives that still operate here and shape the region's character. Visitors experience how trains remain woven into local life and play an important role in community celebrations and special occasions.
Trains do not run daily but mainly for special events, holidays, or certain weekends. Detailed maps and brochures help plan your journey, and numerous small hotels and cozy guesthouses along the route offer overnight stays.
Many of the steam locomotives are over 170 years old and are lovingly maintained and restored by local clubs and groups to keep them in working condition. This preservation work allows visitors to see and ride engines that still function exactly as they did in the 1800s.
