Erholungsgebiet Steinrod, Recreation area in Weiterstadt, Germany
Erholungsgebiet Steinrod is a recreation area centered on a lake in Weiterstadt that is surrounded by woodland and offers multiple activities. The lake itself covers about 7.4 hectares with an average depth of about 2.4 meters (7.9 feet), and around it sit pathways, playgrounds, and sports facilities for visitors.
The lake formed around 1960 from sand and gravel extraction for highway construction, and was later taken over and named by the municipality of Gräfenhausen. This transformation of a former extraction site into a recreation area shows how abandoned industrial land gained new purpose for public enjoyment.
The recreation area serves families who gather at the forest playground and bocce courts for leisure time together. Table tennis facilities and water play installations reflect how the space welcomes visitors of different ages.
The area has a swimming ban on the lake, but walking trails invite visitors to explore the surroundings on foot. The terrain is relatively flat and easy to navigate, making it accessible for people of different abilities.
The lake is home to a variety of fish species including pike, zander, carp, perch, and eel that shape its ecosystem. An artificial waterway called the Apfelbach regulates water levels and connects the site to the Sensfelder Mill downstream.
