St. Jakobi, Gothic church in Schönebeck, Germany

St. Jakobi is a three-nave basilica with two square towers on the western facade topped with baroque domes that reach 48 meters in height. The towers dominate the church structure and give visitors a striking impression of the Gothic architecture when approaching the building.

Construction began in the early 13th century using stone from nearby Plötzky quarries when Schönebeck was surrounded by defensive walls. The building materials came from local sources and reflected the settlement's resources at that time.

The stained glass windows display scenes from the New Testament throughout the side aisles, shaping how light fills the interior space. Created between 1885 and 1895, these works tell biblical stories to anyone walking through the church.

Entering the building requires descending several steps since the church floor was raised by two meters following water damage in 1876. Visitors should be prepared for this level change and watch their footing when entering.

Inside stands a 16th-century baptismal font in Dutch style, showing how other European regions influenced the church's furnishings and design choices. The building also contains a tombstone for Thomas Sarcerius, a notable Protestant minister during the Reformation period.
