Haus Heyden, Medieval castle ruin in Horbach, Germany

Haus Heyden is a medieval castle ruin in Horbach featuring a central fortress with thick stone walls, multiple baileys, and a round tower at its southwestern corner. Water-filled moats still surround the complex today, preserving the original defensive layout.

Construction began in 1303 when the Von Bongart family took control and fortified it as a defensive stronghold for the Counts of Julich. The fortress played an active military role during medieval conflicts in the region.

The castle served as an administrative center for the Heydener Ländchen region, shaping development of territories north of Aachen. Its role made it a significant focal point for local populations throughout medieval times.

The site remains private property with residential apartments located within the baileys, so viewing from outside is typically possible. Walking around the perimeter allows visitors to observe the fortification details from various angles.

The main tower originally rose to a significant height with exceptionally thick walls at its base, enhancing defense capabilities. Access to this tower required climbing a ladder through a high-placed opening, making the design a clever security feature.
