Haus Heyden, Medieval castle ruin in Horbach, Germany
The castle complex includes a central fortress with thick stone walls, several baileys, and a round tower at its southwestern corner displaying loopholes.
Constructed in 1303, Haus Heyden belonged to the Von Bongart family and served as a defensive stronghold for the Counts of Julich during wartime.
The castle formed the administrative center of the Heydener Ländchen region, influencing the development of the territories north of Aachen until the French period.
The castle ruins remain private property with residential apartments located within the baileys, surrounded by gardens and water-filled moats from medieval times.
The main tower originally stood 20 meters tall with 2-meter-thick walls at its base, requiring access through a high entrance reached only by ladder.
