Felsenlandschaft Hollenkammer, Natural monument and cave near Lütersheim, Germany
Hollenkammer is a sandstone cave formation featuring an overhang positioned approximately 5 meters above ground on a 15-meter-high cliff face. The structure displays distinctive red and white sandstone blocks that have weathered into recognizable geological patterns.
During the Christianization period, a hermit lived in the cave and supported the missionary work of Saint Bonifatius throughout the region. This connection to early religious efforts shaped the historical significance of the site.
The cave takes its name from the Hollen, small household spirits in local folklore who were said to dwell within the rocks and offer baked goods to respectful visitors.
The site is accessible year-round and features a resting bench at the sandstone portal for visitors. Sturdy footwear is recommended since the ground can be uneven and damp.
The rock face contains parallel iron squares within weathered sandstone blocks that form striking geometric patterns. These metallic deposits are a geological feature that reveals itself on closer inspection.
