Neues Schloss Arolsen, Baroque castle in Bad Arolsen, Germany
Neues Schloss Arolsen is a baroque castle with extended wings and elaborate interiors decorated by Italian artists using stucco and frescoes. The rooms display typical baroque features with their ornate walls and ceilings.
Construction began in 1710 under Prince Friedrich Anton Ulrich of Waldeck and Pyrmont on land where an Augustinian convent had previously stood. It was built as a new princely residence for the growing court.
The west wing with its library shows how the court valued knowledge and collected books for daily use. Visitors can see today how the noble family lived and worked within these spaces.
Visitors should plan for a guided tour as it offers the best way to explore the rooms and understand their history. The castle is easiest to visit when you allow time for a leisurely walk through the buildings.
Princess Emma of Waldeck and Pyrmont was born at the castle in 1858 and later married King William III of the Netherlands. This makes it the birthplace of a European queen.
