Wartstein, Medieval castle ruins in Roth, Germany
Wartstein is a castle ruin located on Teufelsknock hill, approximately one kilometer west of Eichelburg. The remains consist of wall fragments sitting on natural rock formations at about 400 meters elevation.
The Wartstein family first appeared in records in 1284. The castle was destroyed in 1632 by troops under Tilly during the Thirty Years' War.
The site shows wall remains built directly on natural rock formations, revealing how medieval builders adapted their structures to the landscape. One can see how they used the rocky terrain itself as part of the fortification.
The site is freely accessible year-round with no entry fee. The elevated terrain and rocky ground require sturdy footwear and careful footing when exploring.
An underground cavity exists at the northern edge of the ruins, where records indicate walls stood three to four meters high until 1873. This demonstrates how much of the original structure vanished in the centuries following its destruction.
