Steinmühle, Mühle in Halle (Saale)
The Steinmühle is a watermill in Halle (Saale) located beside the Mühlgraben stream that once processed grain and oil using water power. The building features thick stone walls with small windows and was originally equipped with three water wheels, one of which dates to 1905.
The mill was built in the 17th century and reconstructed after being destroyed during the Thirty Years' War. It operated until the mid-20th century when electric motors replaced water power before the mill ceased operations entirely.
The mill represents how communities once centered their work around water and simple machinery for grinding grain and processing crops. Today, visitors can sense how essential this place was to people's daily survival and rhythms.
The mill is located in a quiet area and can be reached on foot by following the stream. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and come during daylight hours to see the old structure and water wheel clearly.
Although the mill has been silent since the mid-20th century, it still preserves an original 1905 water wheel that demonstrates how mechanical power was once transferred to grinding equipment. Few mills retain such an intact example from that industrial period.
