Kriegergedächtniskapelle Garmisch, Memorial chapel in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany
The Kriegergedächtniskapelle Garmisch is a small memorial building standing on a plateau at the base of Mount Kramer, distinguished by its conical roof shape. The structure features a campanile-style roof tower and sits accessible by hiking trails that reach the site.
The chapel was built in 1952 by the Garmisch Folk Costume Association to honor soldiers who fell or went missing during World War II. It arose from the community's desire to create a fitting memorial for those lost in the war.
The chapel displays names of those lost, carved into its walls for visitors to see. These inscriptions shape how people experience the space and connect with individual stories.
The site is reachable on foot via a hiking trail that starts near the Strauss Villa and climbs to the plateau. From here, additional walking routes connect to nearby mountain lodges and peaks, making it easy to combine the visit with a longer walk.
The memorial was vandalized in 2006, but the community quickly funded repairs for the damaged name plaques and walls. This swift restoration reflects how much the site means to local residents.
