Krämer, Commercial forest in Brandenburg, Germany

Krämer is a commercial forest in Brandenburg, Germany, located northwest of Spandau on a gently elevated area known as the Ländchen Glien. The forest is made up of pine trees and patches of mixed deciduous woodland growing on sandy, mostly flat ground with some low dunes.

The forest was used by surrounding villages for timber over centuries, and replanting began in the early 19th century to restore areas that had been cleared. A postal station was built here in 1649 along the old Hamburg Post Road, a route that gradually lost importance as newer roads and railways took over.

The name Krämer comes from the nearby town of Kremmen, not from traders or a landowner as once believed. Along old paths through the forest, visitors can still spot remains of historic inns and restored mile markers.

The forest is easy to explore on foot or by bike, with a network of paths running through the area. Sturdy footwear is a good idea, as the ground is sandy and path conditions can vary depending on the season.

The A 10 motorway has cut through the forest since 1979, making it one of the few places where a major highway runs directly through a protected woodland area. During the 1980s, parts of the forest were closed to the public and used as a training ground, before replanting efforts resumed later in the decade.
