Neckartalbrücke, Steel bridge in Heilbronn, Germany
The Neckartalbrücke is a highway bridge spanning 1350 meters across the Neckar valley near Heilbronn. It features separate roadways for each direction with three lanes each and combines steel and prestressed concrete in its construction.
The original crossing was built between 1965 and 1967 and served traffic for over 50 years. Because of wear and rising traffic volumes, a new modern bridge was constructed starting in 2017.
The bridge completion timing aligned with the Bundesgartenschau 2019 garden exhibition in Heilbronn, marking a period of infrastructure modernization in the region.
The bridge connects Heilbronn and Neckarsulm and carries approximately 110,000 vehicles daily. Visitors should know that heavy trucks make up a significant share of traffic, especially during peak hours.
The structure features wavy main girders that rise up to 8.3 meters above the pylons, creating an distinctive visual profile. This unusual design choice combines modern engineering with a recognizable appearance in the landscape.
