St. Angarii-Kirche, Protestant church in Schwachhausen, Bremen, Germany
St. Angarii Church is a Protestant house of worship in Schwachhausen, rebuilt between 1955 and 1957 after wartime destruction. The modern building preserves selected elements from the medieval predecessor, including stone epitaphs and the original pulpit.
The original church traces its foundation to 850, when Archbishop Ansgar of Bremen established a clergy foundation at this location. The medieval structure fell to aerial bombardment in 1944 and was subsequently replaced with a new building.
The church is named after Saint Ansgar, an early medieval missionary whose influence shaped the religious character of the region. Visitors can sense this connection through the preserved artworks and interior furnishings that reflect centuries of worship and community life.
The church sits on Hollerallee and is easily accessible by public transport, with regular connections throughout this Bremen residential area. The interior welcomes visitors, though checking opening hours beforehand is advisable.
The tower of the medieval predecessor served as the central reference point for Bremen's first land survey in 1797 and played a key role in mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss's triangulation studies in 1824. This scientific importance connected the building to Bremen's emergence as a center of mapping and mathematics.
