St. Angarii-Kirche, Protestant church in Schwachhausen, Bremen, Germany
The current St. Angarii Church stands on Hollerallee and contains architectural elements preserved from its medieval predecessor, including stone epitaphs and the original pulpit.
The original St. Angarii Church traced its origins to 850 when Archbishop Ansgar of Bremen established a foundation for twelve clergy members at the location.
In November 1522, Dutch Augustinian monk Heinrich von Zütphen delivered a sermon at St. Angarii Church that initiated the Protestant Reformation movement in Bremen.
The new church building, constructed between 1955 and 1957, replaced the medieval structure that was destroyed during World War II aerial bombardments in 1944.
The previous church's 97-meter tower served as the central reference point for Bremen's first land survey in 1797 and mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss's triangulation studies in 1824.
