St. Angarii-Kirche, Protestant church in Schwachhausen, Bremen, Germany
St. Angarii Church is a Protestant church in the Schwachhausen district of Bremen, located on Hollerallee. The current building dates from 1955 to 1957 and retains several elements from its medieval predecessor, including stone epitaphs and the original pulpit.
The site goes back to 850, when Archbishop Ansgar of Bremen established a clergy foundation here. The medieval structure was destroyed by bombing in 1944 and replaced by the building that stands today.
The church is named after Saint Ansgar, a missionary venerated across northern Europe as the Apostle of the North. Inside, the preserved stone epitaphs and the original pulpit give a sense of the long local tradition of worship tied to this congregation.
The church is on Hollerallee in Schwachhausen and is easy to reach by public transport from central Bremen. Visitors who want to see the interior should check opening times before arriving.
The tower of the medieval church served in 1797 as the central reference point for Bremen's first official land survey. Carl Friedrich Gauss then used the same tower in 1824 as a fixed point in his triangulation work across the region.
