Urmitzer Eisenbahnbrücke, Railway bridge in Urmitz, Germany
The Urmitzer Eisenbahnbrücke is a railway bridge crossing the Rhine River, linking Urmitz with Neuwied in Rhineland-Palatinate. The structure spans 430 meters and displays a steel box girder construction that replaced the original arch truss design.
The bridge was built between 1916 and 1918 during World War I to enable military transport across the Rhine. Following its destruction in 1945, it was reconstructed by 1954 with a completely different structural design.
The bridge incorporates architectural elements similar to the Remagen Bridge design, representing early 20th-century German engineering and construction methods.
A narrow walkway along the eastern side allows pedestrians and cyclists to cross the Rhine while viewing Neuwied. Daytime visits offer better visibility of the river and surrounding landscape from the bridge.
The original structure included fortified positions designed for artillery placement, revealing its critical military role during wartime. These defensive features were not retained during the postwar reconstruction, leaving behind a purely civilian crossing today.
