Wehrgangkirche Lauterbach, Medieval fortified church in Lauterbach, Erzgebirge, Germany
Wehrgangkirche Lauterbach is a rectangular hall church featuring a defensive level built in log cabin style above its stone walls, with shooting openings for protection. The structure combines religious function with medieval defensive measures against external threats.
The building was erected around 1465 and was dismantled from its original location in 1906, then rebuilt at a new site. This relocation made it possible to preserve the historical structure for future generations.
The late Gothic winged altar from Freiberg displays carved relief figures of saints including George, Barbara, Martin, and Mary with infant Jesus.
The church can be viewed from outside at any time without entrance fees, and parking spaces are available directly at the building. Visits are flexible and require no advance planning or reservations.
The coffered ceiling above the choir features paintings of the four evangelists, twelve apostles, Moses, Isaiah, and Trinity representations. This rare painted decoration makes the interior a special example of medieval artistic decoration in the region.
