Schießplatz Meppen, Military shooting range in Meppen, Germany
Schießplatz Meppen is a military shooting facility in northwestern Germany designed for testing artillery, firearms, and ammunition across a vast expanse of land. The range includes numerous test zones with infrastructure set up to observe and measure weapons performance during extended firing trials.
The facility was established in 1877 when Krupp company signed an agreement with Meppen to test long-range artillery and naval guns. Over time it developed into one of Europe's major weapons testing grounds.
In 1879, the facility hosted an international shooting demonstration where 97 officers from 18 nations gathered to observe Krupp cannons in action.
Access is restricted to military personnel and authorized contractors due to ongoing weapons testing operations at the site. Visitors should know that safety restrictions apply throughout the area during active testing phases.
The site contains specialized measuring equipment positioned throughout the range to gather precise data on weapon and ammunition performance. These measurement stations allow engineers to evaluate firing accuracy and ballistic behavior under actual conditions.
