Oedwies, Architectural heritage monument in Achslach, Germany.
Oedwies is a forest house situated at approximately 1030 meters elevation between Hirschenstein and Kalberbuckel mountains near Achslach. The building features simple architecture and originally served as a forester's residence before being adapted for hospitality purposes.
A solid forester's house was constructed in 1846, replacing the older building that had stood at this location. A few years later, around 1848, a wooden chapel dedicated to the Scourged Savior was added nearby.
The forest house received permission to serve drinks in 1854, and a tavern room opened on the upper floor. The rooms still reflect the simple craftsman culture of this remote mountain region.
The location is relatively isolated in the mountains and requires intentional planning to reach, as public transportation access is limited. Visitors should inquire in advance about access options and seasonal conditions, especially during winter months.
Next to the forester's house stands a small wooden chapel built around 1848 and dedicated to the Scourged Savior. This unusual outbuilding makes the ensemble a rare example of religious and secular architecture combined together in the mountains.
