DolWin2, Submarine power cable in Lower Saxony, Germany
DolWin2 is a submarine power cable running approximately 135 kilometers beneath the North Sea, carrying electricity from multiple offshore wind farms to converter stations on the German mainland. The system operates at 320,000 volts and links the Gode Wind I, Gode Wind II, and Nordsee One farms to the Dörpen West facility using high-voltage direct current technology.
Construction of the cable system began in 2015 under ABB's management, focusing on the engineering and installation of the subsea connection. The facility was completed and handed over to TenneT for operation in 2017.
The DolWin2 infrastructure reflects Germany's commitment to renewable energy sources and the transformation of its electrical power distribution network.
The cable runs invisibly beneath the seafloor and cannot be observed from ships or the shore. Visitors interested in seeing the infrastructure can only view it at the land-based converter stations, where large transformer equipment and technical buildings are located.
A Norwegian company designed a floating, self-installing platform in Dubai specifically for this project. The platform was transported across the Atlantic to Europe and installed in the North Sea in just ten days.
