Jakobskirche, Medieval fortified church in Urphar, Germany.
Jakobskirche is a medieval fortified church standing on elevated ground south of Urphar's center. The building features sandstone elements, is surrounded by a walled cemetery, and has a prominent tower that shows different construction phases.
The earliest stone fortification dates to the 8th century, while the fortified church took its main form in the 10th and 13th centuries. The tower was rebuilt in the 10th century and the nave was constructed between 1296 and 1297.
The interior walls display medieval frescoes created by the Master of Urphar, showing religious scenes. These paintings shape how the church looks and feels when you walk inside.
The church sits on a hill south of Urphar's center and is easy to reach on foot. Visitors should know that regular services take place, so the interior may not always be freely accessible.
The organ was built in 1780 by Johann Conrad Wehr from Marktheidenfeld and still works after a restoration in 1952. This musical instrument is a rare example of a preserved organ from that period.
