Klingende Blume, Steel sculpture in Treptower Park, Germany
The Klingende Blume is a steel sculpture in Treptower Park that rises approximately 7.6 meters (25 feet) high with a width of about 5.8 meters (19 feet). The work comprises six long rods with spherical end elements at the top that resemble stamens of an upright flower.
The work was installed in 1978 as a contribution to the 'Plastik und Blumen' exhibition, an annual event in the park held since 1957. The sculpture underwent major restoration and returned to its location in 2017 after extensive work.
The work carries a name that directly describes its form, reflecting the artist's intention to translate organic nature into metal. Visitors can see the clear geometric structure, with long rods arranged radially to give the entire piece a symmetrical, flower-like appearance.
The sculpture stands in a public area of the park and is easily accessible on foot without any special access restrictions. During windy weather, the distinctive sound-producing behavior can be best observed and heard.
When wind conditions are right, the spherical end elements collide with each other and produce a distinctive metallic ringing sound. This unpredictable acoustic effect makes each visit different and surprising depending on how the weather happens to be.
