Willigisbrücke, Road bridge in Aschaffenburg, Germany
The Willigisbrücke is a steel road bridge in Aschaffenburg that crosses the Main River and links the districts of Leider and Nilkheim to the city center. The structure allows clearance of about 7 meters (23 feet) and is one of three road crossings at this point of the river.
A first crossing was built at this location in 989 under Archbishop Willigis and served as the only Main crossing between Frankfurt and Würzburg for centuries. The current steel structure was completed in 1969 as a replacement for earlier bridges.
Local students from Hanns-Seidel and Friedrich-Dessauer high schools participate in artistic projects to promote awareness of the bridge's historical significance.
The bridge is open year-round for vehicles and pedestrians, providing a direct route across the river without detours. Those on foot will find pathways on the sides for safe walking.
In summer 1631, a significant meeting took place on this bridge where a local negotiator secured protection for the city from Swedish forces. The event shows the strategic importance this crossing held during the conflicts of that era.
