Beckingen Commandry, دير في ألمانيا
Beckingen Commandry is a religious settlement of the Teutonic Order in Saarland, located along the middle Saar River in the town of Beckingen. The complex included a chapel, residential and administrative buildings, and the Zehntentor, a gate that once controlled access to the estate.
The commandry was founded in the late 13th century by the Teutonic Order and served as a religious and economic center in the region. The order managed lands here, collected tithes, and maintained its presence with fortifications such as the Zehntentor.
The name reflects the role of a Komtur, a commander of the Teutonic Order who oversaw the estate. The simple architecture with its solid walls still shows how religious life and practical administration were intertwined in this place.
The site is easily reached on foot from Beckingen town center, with walking paths through the surrounding forests and along the Saar. Information signs throughout the grounds explain its history and layout, allowing you to explore at your own pace without obstacles.
The Zehntentor, the access gate to the commandry, remains as a visible symbol of the settlement's economic role, as it controlled the collection of tithes and local resources. This structure shows how religious communities also functioned as administrative centers.
