Schalksmühle, municipality in North-Rhine Westfalia, Germany
Schalksmühle is a small municipality in Marische Kreis with rolling terrain featuring elevation changes up to about 980 feet (300 meters). Rivers such as the Volme, Glor, and Halver shape the landscape, while hiking trails and cycling routes wind through forests and along water.
Schalksmühle was first mentioned in 1407 but remained a very small settlement for centuries with only a handful of buildings. The present municipality formed in 1970 through the merger of several villages, including Schalksmühle, Hulscheid, and Dahlerbrück.
The Lisettkenmarkt commemorates Lisette Cramer, a 19th-century woman who traveled on foot across the countryside selling goods and sharing news with neighbors. This annual June festival shows how the community keeps its local heritage alive through celebration.
The locality offers several marked hiking trails of varying lengths, including the Nature-Culture Trail covering about 11 miles (18 kilometers) through meadows, forests, and villages. Hotels, guesthouses, and vacation rentals provide comfortable lodging, making it easy for day-trippers to find accommodation.
The 1600s Wippekühl farmhouse still displays charming hand-painted wall decorations and herringbone paving stones polished smooth by rivers over centuries. Today it functions as an event venue while revealing how rural life looked in earlier times.
