Villa Wilhelm Wertheim, Heritage villa in Grunewald, Germany
Villa Wilhelm Wertheim is a large mansion located at Lassenstrasse 4 in Berlin's Grunewald district, featuring a mansard roof and wooden shingled gables. The building combines spacious proportions with elaborate roof design and shapes the residential character of the surrounding area.
The mansion was built between 1897 and 1898 as a summer home for department store magnate Wilhelm Wertheim, designed by architects Alfred Messel and Martin Altgelt. In 1925, architect Willi Lorch carried out major renovations that changed parts of the original design.
The house reflects how wealthy Berlin merchants built their homes in Grunewald, choosing this area for spacious residences with ornate architectural details. Walking through the district, you can see how such villas shaped the neighborhood and reveal the lifestyle of their inhabitants.
The building is a protected heritage monument that you can view from the exterior as you walk through the Grunewald neighborhood. The area is pleasant to explore on foot, especially during warmer months when the streets and green spaces invite leisurely strolls.
During the 1950s and 1960s, the house was home to composer Gerhard Winkler and his family, giving it a musical history that few visitors know about. This chapter added an artistic dimension to the villa's life beyond its original role as a wealthy merchant's retreat.
