Teufelssteine, Rock formation in Johanngeorgenstadt, Germany.
The Teufelssteine is a granite rock formation that rises at approximately 750 meters elevation in the upper Ore Mountains. The stone was shaped through natural weathering and contains feldspar, quartz, mica, and tourmaline.
The rock formation was created millions of years ago through weathering of Eibenstock granite. The site became known as a climbing destination in the 20th century as the sport developed.
The name comes from old mining folklore that associated evil spirits with the rock formation. Climbers now blend this local legend with their passion for the sport at this location.
The site is divided into six climbing areas with different difficulty levels suitable for beginners through experienced climbers. A nature trail runs through the area providing information about geology and rare species.
The area is designated as a Natura 2000 protected zone, making it a rare example where sport and nature conservation coexist. This balance between use and protection is uncommon at climbing areas elsewhere.
