Burg Bucherbach, Water castle in Püttlingen, Germany
Burg Bucherbach is a water castle in Püttlingen with four round corner towers surrounding a square inner courtyard that was designed for defense. The towers vary in their dimensions and display different architectural features from different building phases.
The castle dates to the 13th century and first appeared in written records in 1326 within an inheritance document of the Saarbrücken-Commercy family. It served as an important border fortress in this region for many centuries.
The fortress transformed from a military stronghold into an agricultural estate during the 18th century, a shift that reflects how land use changed in the region. This conversion is still visible today in how the buildings and courtyards are arranged.
The site is freely accessible and offers good views of medieval fortification techniques from various angles. An audio guide helps visitors understand the individual towers and their different purposes.
The west tower stands out with a former summer hall featuring large window frames, giving it a completely different appearance from the three other corner towers. These generous openings show that this tower was later adapted for residential use.
