Tegelberg Cable Car, Aerial tramway in Schwangau, Germany.
Tegelberg Cable Car is an aerial tramway in Schwangau that transports visitors up the mountain while climbing approximately 900 meters in elevation. The modern system features two cabins and reliably carries people to just under 1,700 meters in height.
The cable car was built in the post-war period as a modern transport solution for the mountain region and significantly improved access to higher elevations. The project was part of the tourism development of the Allgäu and helped open up this area to visitors.
The name Tegelberg comes from medieval German and refers to roof tiles that were once produced in this region. Today visitors use the station as a gateway to quickly access the higher elevations and explore the surrounding mountain landscape.
The ride takes about 10 minutes and the cabins offer comfortable space for the journey upward. Visitors should expect changeable mountain weather conditions and bring warm clothing, especially during the cooler months.
Excavations near the station uncovered remains of a Roman country villa from the 2nd century, showing that this area was inhabited long ago in antiquity. These archaeological finds suggest that people have been drawn to this alpine region for nearly 2,000 years.
