Vogel- und Tierpark Irgenöd, Bird park and zoo in Ortenburg, Germany
Vogel- und Tierpark Irgenöd is a zoo in Ortenburg covering roughly six hectares with over 100 bird species and various mammals including kangaroos, gibbons, and meerkats living in different habitat areas. The park features enclosures designed to let visitors watch the animals in settings that reflect their natural environments.
The facility was founded in 1975 and began as a bird collection before expanding into one of the largest avian collections in Southern Germany. Over the decades, mammals were gradually added to create a more diverse animal park.
The park maintains membership in both the Deutsche Tierparkgesellschaft and Deutscher Wildgehege-Verband, supporting German wildlife conservation initiatives.
The best time to visit is during the operating season from April to November when all areas are open and the animals are most active. A combination ticket allows you to also visit the nearby Wildpark Schloss Ortenburg.
The park successfully bred cassowaries in 2012, a remarkable achievement with this rare and demanding species. This accomplishment demonstrates the facility's commitment to specialized breeding programs and animal care.
