Djebel Chélia, Mountain summit in Yabous, Algeria.
Djebel Chélia is the highest summit in the Aurès mountain range in northeastern Algeria, reaching 2,328 meters above sea level. It rises above the town of Yabous and stands over a landscape of limestone ridges and forested slopes.
The Aurès region around this peak has been inhabited by Chaoui Berber communities for centuries, who used the mountains as a place to settle and raise livestock. During the Algerian war of independence in the 1950s, this part of the Aurès was one of the first areas where armed resistance began.
The word Djebel simply means "mountain" in Arabic, and local Berber communities use the name Chélia to refer specifically to this summit in everyday speech. Visitors passing through nearby villages may notice woven textiles, pottery, and seasonal gatherings that reflect how mountain life is still organized around the land.
Spring and autumn offer the most manageable conditions for reaching the summit, as winters bring snow and summers can be very hot at lower elevations. Starting from Yabous is the most practical approach, and a local guide can help with orientation on the higher sections of the climb.
Djebel Chélia is one of the few peaks in North Africa that regularly receives lasting snow cover in winter, which is unusual for this part of the continent. The snow on north-facing slopes can linger well into spring, creating a clear contrast with the dry lowlands visible below.
