Odense Zoo, Zoological garden in Odense, Denmark
Odense Zoo is a zoological garden in Odense, Denmark, home to animals from many climate zones, including Siberian tigers, manatees, giraffes, zebras, and a wide range of bird species. The enclosures are designed to reflect the natural surroundings of each animal, giving the grounds a varied look as you walk through.
The zoo opened in 1930 as a modest animal collection on the outskirts of Odense and gradually expanded over the following decades. Over time, the addition of new enclosures and educational programs shifted its focus toward wildlife research and conservation.
Odense Zoo runs daily keeper talks where staff demonstrate how they care for the animals and share observations about wild behavior. These sessions take place close to the enclosures, making it easy to watch the animals at the same time.
The grounds have several paths laid out through them, so it is easy to explore at your own pace and choose your own route. A visit can take several hours, so comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are worth bringing.
The Bøgetoppen walkway links nine raised platforms through a beech forest, with suspension bridges running between 6 and 12 meters (20 to 40 feet) above the ground. From up there, visitors look out over the treetops from a perspective that is hard to find anywhere else in Denmark.
