Mountain Dwellings, building in Copenhagen
Mountain Dwellings is a residential building with integrated parking in Copenhagen's Ørestad district, featuring a sloped form that resembles mountain ranges. The complex includes apartments with L-shaped floor plans, private roof gardens, and a garage holding approximately 480 parking spaces beneath the residential units.
Completed in 2008, the complex resulted from collaboration between architects Bjarke Ingels Group and JDS Architects. The project addressed the challenge of combining residential space and parking efficiently in an expanding urban area.
The name refers to the distinctive mountain-like shape that blends into the urban landscape. The roof gardens serve as outdoor extensions where residents experience seasonal changes and enjoy a connection to nature within the city.
The building is within easy walking distance of Ørestad Banen station and is well served by public transport. A public staircase allows visitors to explore the mountain-like structure and enjoy the views from higher points.
The north facade displays a large Mount Everest mural made from perforated aluminum plates that appears dark by daylight and glows in different colors at night through internal lighting. Inside the garage, French artist Victor Ash painted murals on stacked scrap cars depicting moose and wolves.
