8 House, Mixed-use building in Ørestad, Denmark
8 House is a mixed-use building in Ørestad with a distinctive eight-shaped form that combines residential units, offices, and retail spaces. The structure distributes these different functions across horizontal layers that work together as an integrated whole.
The building was completed in 2010 by Bjarke Ingels Group and marks a turning point in modern urban development in Denmark. It represents one of the country's largest private building projects and introduced new approaches to how people could live together in a city.
The building brings together people from different walks of life, creating a stacked neighborhood where residents and workers share the same vertical space. This mixing of homes, offices, and shops throughout the structure builds a community across all levels.
The place is easily reached through an extensive network of walkways and bicycle paths that connect street level to the upper floors. This good access makes it simple to explore the building and the surrounding neighborhood.
Two interior courtyards sit within the building's curved shape and create green retreats in the middle of the development. Around 1700 square meters of green roofs visually connect the building to the surrounding landscape.
