4. Maj Kollegiet, University dormitory in Frederiksberg Municipality, Denmark
The 4. Maj Kollegiet is a student residence in Frederiksberg designed by architect Hans Hansen, combining individual living quarters with shared communal spaces throughout the complex. The grounds also include Hassagers Kollegium, a separate section within the same property for select students of the University of Copenhagen.
Founded in 1951, this residence initially housed descendants of Danish World War II resistance fighters as a way to honor their families' contributions. Over time it expanded to welcome all students, becoming a well-established accommodation for university residents.
The name refers to Denmark's liberation on May 4, 1945, a date residents mark each year with flag ceremonies and gatherings. This tradition connects the past with daily life in the residence and creates a shared sense of historical continuity among students.
The residence is located in Frederiksberg, a neighborhood with good public transit connections and local shops nearby. Be aware that this is private student housing, so access to the grounds is generally restricted unless you have arranged a visit beforehand.
Within the grounds sits Hassagers Kollegium, a dedicated section reserved for University of Copenhagen students who have completed 120 ECTS credits in their studies. This arrangement rewards academic progress and sets this residence apart from typical dormitory housing.
