Frederiksberg Municipality

Frederiksberg Municipality is an independent administrative division with around 100,000 residents on just under 9 square kilometers, completely surrounded by Copenhagen. The area sits within the Capital Region and forms its own urban enclave.

The area was founded in 1651 when King Frederik III granted settlement rights at Allegade and originally named the quarter New Dutchman-town. Over time, the settlement grew from a small community into a densely populated urban district.

The area is known for its schools and arts institutions, including the Royal Danish Academy of Music and several University of Copenhagen facilities. These establishments shape the character and daily life of the community.

The area is well connected by public transit, especially through several Copenhagen Metro stations. Key stops include Frederiksberg Station and Fasanvej Station, which offer quick access to other neighborhoods.

Despite its closeness to Copenhagen, this municipality has maintained its administrative independence since its founding. This rare arrangement makes it a special case in Danish governance.
