Søndermarken, Historic park in Frederiksberg, Denmark.
Søndermarken is a park in Frederiksberg that spreads across hilly terrain with meadows, woodlands, and numerous walking paths. It sits on the border between Valby and the Carlsberg area and features varied spaces for different activities.
The park developed alongside Frederiksberg Gardens and its three underground cisterns formed part of Copenhagen's first municipal water supply system in the 19th century. These cisterns played an important role in delivering water to the expanding city.
The Memorial Mound from 1925 displays a sculpture showing Denmark as a mother embracing her children. This representation commemorates Danish emigration to America and attracted royal family members to the site.
The grounds include dedicated areas for children, several jogging routes, and connect directly to public transportation for easy access from central Copenhagen. The various paths are well maintained and make navigation straightforward.
The former water storage tanks beneath the park are now called Cisternerne, an underground art space showcasing contemporary art installations in this historic setting. This subterranean project creatively repurposes the original function of the location.
