Søholt

Søholt is a Renaissance Revival manor standing on the southern shore of Maribo Lakes, featuring a two-storey whitewashed main building with Flemish gables and a tower. The property spreads across extensive grounds with Baroque-style gardens and multiple structures arranged around the central residence.

The estate was founded in the mid-16th century, with the current main building constructed in 1804 and undergoing significant architectural changes throughout the 19th century. Later renovations in the late 19th century included the removal of older wings to modernize the structure.

The Bertouch family made the estate a gathering place for artists and writers during summer months in the early 19th century. This artistic legacy remains visible in how the gardens and rooms were arranged to encourage conversation and creative exchange.

The gardens remain open for public visits throughout the year and offer pleasant paths for walking through the manicured grounds. The lakeside location makes it easy to spend time exploring the exterior spaces on foot.

The property withstood attacks from Swedish forces and endured despite repeated hardships in its history. This resilience became part of the place's character and its role as a persistent landmark in the local landscape.
