Alulinn, Archaeological monument in Aa, Estonia
Alulinn is an ancient hillfort near Aa with an oval foundation and limestone walls. The site spans several thousand square meters and displays the typical structure of a medieval fortification from this region.
This fortification emerged as the easternmost defensive structure in Virumaa during medieval times. It became known to a wider audience through Friedrich Reinhold Kreutzwald's documentation in the 19th century.
Nearby excavations revealed over 90 Iron Age artifacts, including spearheads, sickles, axe heads, and sword fragments, indicating ceremonial activities at this location.
The site sits in an open landscape and is easily reachable on foot, with navigation possible along visible or marked paths. Visitors should wear weather-appropriate clothing since the exposed area offers little shelter from wind and rain.
Excavations nearby have uncovered Iron Age artifacts including spearheads, sickles, and sword fragments, suggesting special activities took place at this location. The name of the surrounding region Alutaguse is said to derive from this site.
