Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de Estíbaliz, Catholic pilgrimage church in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain.

The Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de Estíbaliz is a Romanesque church with semi-circular arches, thick stone walls, and columns decorated with carved scenes. The interior feels gathered and serene, with light flowing through high windows that illuminate the stone surfaces and carved details.

The church was founded in the 11th century with support from noblewoman Toda López of the House of Haro, demonstrating female influence in medieval patronage. Since then, it has developed into a recognized pilgrimage destination that continues to draw travelers from across the region.

The carved capitals of the columns display Old Testament scenes and religious figures that once served to teach visitors who could not read. Today, these carvings offer insight into the beliefs and daily concerns of medieval communities who made pilgrimages here.

The site is located about 8 kilometers from central Vitoria-Gasteiz and is easily reached by car or through organized tours. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes since the ground is uneven and some surrounding areas are accessed via unpaved paths.

Pope Francis granted the sanctuary a Holy Year from 2023 to 2024 to mark the centenary of the canonical coronation of the Virgin Mary. This distinction transformed it into a special pilgrimage destination for two years with heightened religious significance.
