Castle of Peracense, Medieval castle in Peracense, Spain

Castle of Peracense is a medieval fortress in Peracense comprising three concentric defensive enclosures. The structures were constructed from local red stone and sit on an elevated location in the mountainous region.

The fortress originated as an Islamic fortification and was later transformed into a Christian castle during the 13th century. It served as a border stronghold between the kingdoms of Castile and Aragon.

The fortress is listed as protected cultural heritage in Spain and displays medieval construction methods visible to visitors today. You can see old defense techniques reflected in how the walls and towers were built.

The fortress is located in a mountainous region and is open to visitors on most days. It is advisable to wear sturdy footwear as access involves walking over uneven paths.

The walls and stone of the castle blend seamlessly with the natural red rock formations of Sierra Menera. The builders cleverly integrated the existing geology as part of the defensive structure.
