German War Cemetery of Cuacos de Yuste, Military cemetery in Cuacos de Yuste, Spain.
The German War Cemetery of Cuacos de Yuste is a resting place for fallen soldiers in western Spain, not far from the Monastery of San Jerónimo de Yuste. The site holds one hundred and eighty graves marked by black crosses remembering men who died during both world wars.
Twenty-six crew members of the German submarine U-39, which arrived damaged at the Cartagena naval base in 1918, were buried here. The cemetery was later maintained by the German War Graves Commission and expanded to include graves from the Second World War.
The cemetery follows the design of German memorial sites abroad and displays simple crosses made of dark stone bearing the names and ranks of those buried here. Visitors walking through the rows today will find inscriptions on each grave recording the age and origin of the soldiers.
The graves are arranged in several rows on level ground and can be easily reached on foot. Records maintained by the Commission at the entrance provide information about those buried here.
Eight graves bear the inscription Ein Unbekannter Deutscher Soldat, as the identity of those buried could not be established. These markers remember men whose names were lost.
