Railway Museum of Catalonia

The Railway Museum of Catalonia houses roughly 50 railway vehicles, including around 28 steam locomotives, within a 19th-century building complex originally designed for locomotive maintenance. The site displays machines and cars from different eras that demonstrate the evolution of train technology and design over time.

The building began as a working repair facility where locomotives were serviced until operations ceased in 1967. It was later transformed into a museum to preserve this industrial past and make it accessible to the public.

The collection occupies a former locomotive depot that was once the heart of the town's industrial life and continues to shape how visitors understand local railway heritage. The preserved vehicles tell the story of how trains changed people's lives and work in the region over more than a century.

The museum sits right next to Vilanova i la Geltrú railway station and is easy to reach on foot. Visitors will find clear displays and explanations on site that help them understand the vehicles and their technical features.

The museum preserves the oldest surviving original locomotive in Spain, making it a significant site for railway enthusiasts. Additionally, visitors can watch a working replica of the first steam engine used on the Iberian Peninsula during monthly demonstrations.
