Hermitage of San Saturio, Baroque hermitage church in Soria, Spain.
The Hermitage of San Saturio is a Baroque church in Soria, built above natural caves near the Duero River. The octagonal structure features a domed roof topped with a lantern and a separate brick bell tower.
An ancient oratory once stood at this location dating back to 1148, but was replaced by a new construction built in 1694. This newer building succeeded an earlier hermitage and has endured to the present.
The frescoes inside were created by a local priest in the early 1700s, depicting religious scenes and decorative details throughout the rooms. These paintings reflect the artistic traditions of the period and give the interior its distinctive character.
Entry is through the caves beneath the building, where visitors climb stairs through multiple interior rooms and chambers. Several of these spaces have balconies that offer views toward the surrounding landscape.
The building houses the remains of Saint Saturio in its main altar, recognized as the patron saint of the city. This veneration was formally acknowledged in 1743 by papal authority.
